Lately…

I have been told that one of the ideas behind blogging is to keep people up to date with your activities. Apparently it holds people’s attention and makes you relevant, or something. And as I am now going to endeavour to be a proper social media being I am going to do this. So this is a blog post about what I have been up to…

Lately I have  been being sociable. At the behest of Richard, the ever mentioned friend and social media fiend – seriously, I’m just going to write an entire blog post about him one day – I attended a meeting of something called the Cornwall Social Media Cafe. It is a group that meets on the second Tuesday of every month, usually somewhere in Truro, for people working in or interested in social media in Cornwall. They informally discuss ideas, present work, network and drink a little (you can already see the appeal!). As most of my work is in London but I actually live in Cornwall, where I have no business presence, I thought it was about time that I get me some of that local money, which is only going to happen if I get out there and network. Attending the Cornwall Social Media Cafe, or CSMC for the initiated of us, is a good way of doing this. It is also a good way of getting an insight into other people’s creative and business processes, such as happened when Herve, a lovely man with a lovely idea, presented his new business, Mutton. He showed us his work and ideas, we discussed it, it was fun. Hit the links, get involved people!

Lately I have also been corrupting minds. The crazy fools at Truro College who run the FdA Photography courses have asked me back to run some workshops on portraiture and studio lighting and give a little constructive criticism with their first year students. I LOVE doing this. I get a real kick out of working with students and sharing my ideas on what I do and on photography in general. I also remember that when I was studying some of the most important moments in my education and evolution as a photographer came from visiting lecturers, from what they had to say and from their criticism of my images, one time of which I got a savaging that has actually, for the better, shaped the way I work to this day. I am yet to give a savaging, but I’m pretty sure I’ve scared a few students. Just paying it forward…

Lately I have been receiving some interesting propositions too (about my photography, obviously). But I am going to keep that quiet until there is something solid to share. I’m such a tease…

Want to see a photograph taken with one of the aforementioned photography students and a model I found wandering around the college? And then a photo actually taken by said student (Elliot Hyde) with another model I found wandering the college? Of course you do…
